so I wrote this knowing that the guitar part I was playing was definitely not of my own creation, and when I figured out what it was, I already had a short little song and it was too late. then I took some harmony inspiration from celebrate you just to make things worse. so I'm conflicted here because I like the song, but I'm not a fan of copyright infrigement (I've bordered on it before, for allusion's sake, but this is a bit too much). if I ever do a (good) cover of celebrate you I'll probably lead into it with this, but for now I'm just gonna sit on it.

i HATE it when you're writing a song and you slowly realize that you're playing the chords to someone else's song! it's happened to me a couple of times.

but i think if you wouldn't have mentioned that the song sounds like 'celebrate you,' it wouldn't have even crossed my mind really. i certainly don't think it sounds like a rip off at all. it just has some slight resemblance so i think you should keep it.

what are your influences? it reminds me of a perfect circle and evanescence.

good to know. and I wouldn't throw it out or anything, I always keep my songs, I listen to it a lot actually.

funny you should say that, those are two of the influences I list most (veruca salt being another). other than them, there's tori amos, circa survive, far, garbage, belly. basically girl bands, heavy prog-rock and the occasional punk/ska band. why do I always feel like I'm writing an ad when listing influences?

so I'm glad I'm not the only one who inadvertently rips off veruca songs. I should just start sampling songs on purpose so it's not so frustrating.
